Why are we the loneliest when surrounded by people? A question that Edward Hopper’s ‘Soir Bleu’ poses in the embodiment of strangers at the end of a party– most eye-catching of the group being that of a clown smoking a cigarette and a powdered prostitute looking down. But the questions we’d like to pose are: what do a clown and a prostitute have in common? Can a painting about loneliness actually be kind of… funny? Maybe really weird? We’re willing to do what it takes to find out. Through a lens of surrealism, we meet our duo at the end of a party as they navigate social anxiety and the desire to be seen. Despite a rocky start, they try and try again, utilizing help from tape recorded conversations, sex toys, improvisation techniques, gender swapping, and an obscene amount of white powder and red paint. This exploration is as much a play as it is an ode to ‘yes, and’-ing through the realities of making friends. At the end of the day, we’re all just looking for a little connection (and maybe a fake cigarette or two).

roundandround

created by Sadie Pillion-Gardner

If you're lucky, the world allows you years of ignorance. But watch out! Catching you off guard is part of grief's game. Shock, rage, and isolation follow with only nostalgia to sustain yourself. And if you think the ends in sight, you're a fool. Grief is a life long affliction. Follow Sadie Pillion-Gardner's relationship with grief in her one-woman embodied movement piece, roundandround, August 8th at 9:30 pm and August 18th at 3 pm at The Tank.
