“If you could talk to yourself at five years old, what would you say?”
It’s a common interview question that begs an uplifting answer, but what do you say when you know everything that kid has in store for them?
As transgender artists and creatives, we rightfully push back against the dominant media narrative that being trans involves some form of trauma. We write and demand to see, more uplifting stories of trans joy. But what if your life was less than joyful? How do you tell your story, if at all? Do you present your pain, knowing it’s not going to help anyone? Or do you try to find some joy in the process?
Maybe telling your story isn’t meant to help anyone else but you.
everyday. is a solo cabaret written and performed by Samy Nour Younes. Using diary entries and recordings from the first year of their transition, anecdotes from their adolescence, and existing musical theater repertoire, everyday. is a message to Samy’s younger self. It's an elegy for the past they had. It's abandoning a longing for the past they wish they had. It's a celebration of becoming.
Will you celebrate with us?
everyday. is directed by L Morgan Lee, with dramaturgy by Ianne Fields Stewart and musical direction/accompaniment by Justin Ward Weber.
It is presented as part of the Tank’s Tank-aret series.
