Carlos, an 18-year-old Hispanic-American soldier serves in Iraq with his older, illegal-immigrant brother during the height of the Iraq war. His brother is killed by insurgents and he's critically wounded during the same attack. When he comes back to the States to undergo therapy and rehab, he learns that his parents have been deported back to Mexico and that his younger siblings have been placed in the California foster care system. The narrative follows his struggle to get his siblings back amidst political skullduggery and a national outpouring of hatred towards Hispanic Americans and a movement to build a wall along the Mexican border.
