  • The Tank 312 W 36th St New York, NY, 10018 United States (map)

June 1st and 2nd at 7pm.

In the wake of the decision to end her terminal suffering via assisted suicide, a mother and her daughters navigate acceptance and forgiveness within the complexities of grief. Throw in a mostly-useless husband, a pedophilic priest and a death doula of a race unknown, our Irish-American family nervously step-claps on the dance floor of identity politics and privilege. Polite double talk quickly evaporates as secrets are revealed in the way the only can behind closed doors of a family home. The nature of the American suburb and its illusion of safety leads us to question what we attempt to protect ourselves from and why. Characters navigate around hazardous taboos, exposing how attitudes toward death can be at once excruciating, daringly intimate and savagely funny. SWIM is both a scathing commentary on the state of mental healthcare in America and a testament to the strength of the American family.
