This week: Amplifying Activists Together
——-
Amplifying Activists Together is a grassroots group open to anyone who lives, works, or plays in NYS and wants to consistently take direct action in progressive and radical movements that are led by longtime organizers. On Zoom, AAT meets weekly (often on Friday afternoons) and typically begins with context/step-by-step instructions by the coordinators (EllaRose Chary, Natasha Sinha, & Jay Stull) and a brief update by a guest speaker who is a longtime activist for one of the movements, before spending the rest of the one hour lobbying our representatives regarding multiple campaigns. An updated and detailed guiding document is provided each week, to comprehensively provide all the tools needed to participate in phone banking, emailing, tweeting, etc. The chat remains active throughout the hour, with questions/answers and any further guidance folks may want. Toward the end of the hour, breakout rooms provide a way to take a break and connect with fellow AAT participants!
Committing to the weekly AAT hour guarantees meaningful direct action and offers a way into many progressive and radical movements, and a way to practice collective action. The hope is that everyone in AAT will build this as a sustained practice, and continually introduce their own networks into the space, so that solidarity can grow. Though AAT has spread beyond the theater community, one of our initial impulses was to organize members of the theater community during a difficult time for the industry. We know that using our collective power and creative energy in this moment to invest in things that truly make our city safe and healthy is the only path forward as we consider what working in theater and being a theater artist means in this time and for the future.
