The Bechdel Group’s Workshop Series is a series of readings and discussions around new work in progress. We invite all actors, directors, dramaturgs, playwrights, and theatre lovers to join us for a festive, friendly, informal community evening of discussion around new work.
Our Famous Friend, by Kaitlin Mackenzie
Elizabeth and Gio have lived their whole lives in the same suburban town. When their childhood friend Charlotte -- now a semi-successful film actor -- returns home for the first time in twenty years, she brings with her a tangle of resentments, insecurities, and longings. Now a single afternoon visit will force them all to question their own versions of the past, and look with new eyes toward the future.
Songbird, by Rachel Luann Strayer
Sometimes we do not choose to be silent; sometimes we are bullied into silence by the ones we love. Jess is about to find out that true compassion for another person can bring her voice back, but only if she chooses to use it.
The Bechdel Group is a New York City based group that hosts a series of readings and discussions of new work and works in progress. Our mission is to challenge the accepted portrayal of women on stage. Our goals are to: promote writers writing for women, create more roles for women, and foster an active and engaged community of actors, playwrights, directors, dramaturgs, and theatre lovers.
