“Not sure, I haven’t decided how much the memories of prior days are worth.”
Piece of Mind is a reflective project on the process of creation, how the past influences the present, and how shared experience manifests differently in every individual. This project is comprised of journal entries over a three-year period and the development of a painting as dictated by the entries themselves.
The project was developed by the creator, Nick Turturro, over the span of a few months. Exempt from this are the journal entries themselves which started September 15th, 2019. The project is an exploration in sharing a developmental process. More often than not we only ever see the finished product when it comes to artistic endeavors. Piece of Mind aims to reveal all the personal elements that inspire and motivate. Memories, experiences, environment, it’s impossible to keep personal life separate from one’s art.
Unable to separate personal life from personal art, Piece of Mind does not hesitate to reflect on challenging times. Depressive periods, existential anxiety, and isolation are large themes throughout the piece, while contrasted by the simple beauties that life offers us when things are hard. The focus is to be honest, and to not shy away from the realities that life presents us.
It’s the realities that life presents that make what you see today.
