When every societal system works against you, what does hope look like? Hope looks like passing banned books to your classmates behind the teacher's back. Hope looks like a secret language your friend group invented to curse in code. Hope looks like helping your friends with their makeup before performing theater that might be banned tomorrow. Hope looks like sharing one Olivieh sandwich between your four best friends. Hope looks like this group of rule-bending Iranian teenage girls, Rosa, Mahboubeh, Nikta, Samar, and Banafsheh waiting for the school bell to free them and plan their limitless futures. In the Stillness of Night shares the tragic, bittersweetness of Iranian girlhood, plus the stark bleakness of Iranian womanhood. By playing with time and space, this play asks us if healing the past and the present are inevitably intertwined.

This showcase was funded by the NYC Women’s Fund and is presented by The Tank.
