“Houston, We Have a Problem” is a 60 minute piece of theatre created and performed by Natasha Roland and Chloe Rice that tells the story of two people striving to forge a connection when they could not be farther apart. Theodore, a former astronaut and missions control capsule communicator, talks with Jerry, an astronaut currently living in outer space, in what will probably be the last conversation they ever have. The show begins when Jerry announces that he has decided not to return to Earth. The show then details this conversation through a series of theatrical and movement based flashback that explore the themes of time and space, unrequited love, exploring identity, homosexuality and the sacrifices we make to be citizens of this planet. The show lives in an alternate past that mimics 1980s America, playing on familiar nostalgia of the 80s with music and aesthetic. This show pulls at the all too familiar feeling of wanting someone who doesn’t want you back, and the not so familiar situation of that person being hundreds of light years away, orbiting our planet. It begs the question as to what happens when, even in infinite vacuum of space, the elephant in the room is the scariest thing of them all.
