The Chemistry of Salt
In 1998, Carlos, a 23-year-old gay man, embarked on a life-changing journey from northern Mexico to the capital and discovered Salvador Novo's recently published autobiography, The Pillar of Salt. Through Novo's own words, we learn about the life of this queer Mexican author learning about his triumphs and struggles. Set against the backdrop of the sweeping AIDS crisis in Mexico City, Carlos grapples with finding solace in Novo's story while navigating the complexities of his own life. This heartfelt coming-of-age narrative contrasts the life of a Mexican queer pioneer with that of an aspiring teacher, shedding light on the profound journey of embracing one's identity and living authentically.
