About the Show

Choreographers Krista Jansen and CJ Holm are forming an expedition into their shared and separate dance histories. They’re coming back with unusual artifacts, rare specimens, and implausible field notes to explain where they’ve been and where they’re going.

About the Artist

CJ Holm began making dances in 1997 and is still doing it. As a choreographer, CJ works in and with the body and all its expressive capacities, including gesture, speech, and vocal sound as well as dance. She works under the name “Creature Theater“ to remind us that we are animals. Her work comes from a bottomless curiosity for how these animals behave, how they get their needs met, how they engage with their desires, and how they treat one another. CJ studied dance at Hampshire College before moving to New York in 2006. CJ's work has been presented locally at BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Chez Bushwick, Center for Performance Research, Dixon Place, Irondale Center, Judson Church—both for Movement Research and for STUFFED, Queens Fringe Fest, The Tank; and out-of-town at Christ Church (Philadelphia, PA), Dance Place (Washington, DC), and the Howard County Dance Festival (Columbia, MD). In July 2012, with Tiana Hemlock, CJ co-produced Treasures From the Vault, a showcase for makers to revive work unjustly left on the shelf, at Triskelion Arts Center. CJ has been a resident artist at Body Art Dance (Queens, NY), FARspace (New York, NY), Earthdance Creative Living (Plainfield, MA), and Ponderosa Movement and Discovery (Stolzenhagen, Germany). In 2014, CJ will be a Groundwork resident at the Cora Dance Studio in Brooklyn, NY.

Krista Jansen is a dancer and choreographer born, raised and based in New York City. She was an original cast member and Assistant Rehearsal director for the critically acclaimed “Doug Elkins & Friends’ Fraulein Maria”, and for seven years performed and toured with that production to the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, the American Dance Festival, the Paramount theatre, Dance Theatre Workshop, Martha’s Vineyard, and other venues around the United States and Canada. Her own choreography has been performed at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, The FAB! Festival, The DancenOw RAW festival, the WAXworks series at Triskelion Arts, the Player's Theatre, the Harkness Dance Festival and Dance Theater Workshop. She is also a teaching assistant to Ellen Robbins whose modern dance classes for children ages 5-15 were Krista’s first experience in dance, choreography, and improvisation. www.kristajansen.wordpress.com is a great place to sign her mailing list, look at dance-y pictures, and stay updated on her performances.

Jansen & Holm’s seed was planted in 2009, when Krista Jansen and CJ Holm met in Paul Matteson’s dance class. Shortly afterward, they found themselves dancing alongside each other in Cat Scratch Theatre’s 60×60 Festival at Galapagos in Brooklyn, NY. Since then, they have been dancing with and for each other. In 2013, they made it official as Jansen & Holm, presenting their first shared evening of dance, looking forward to a collaborative future together.
