Frances odysseys down California's freeways in search of a supermarket where she once received a prophecy. As the supermarket waits for her, its teen girl employees are surveilled. Frances inches closer, California burns, and the supermarket transforms monstrously. Joan of Arc in a Supermarket in California is an epic daydream that explores intuition, paranoia, and possession.

MEET THE TEAM


CHLOE XTINA

Playwright

Chloe Xtina (she/her) is a playwright and filmmaker from Oakland, now based in Brooklyn. She is a 2023 Sundance Ignite Fellow and completed her BA in playwriting from UCLA in 2021. She tells stories about psychosexual gazes, desire, and California's climate crisis through a magical realist lens. Chloe and her work have been featured in Variety, Women & Hollywood, and NoBudge (2020 Film of the Year). She is thrilled to be making her Off-Broadway debut with Joan of Arc in a Supermarket in California after a residency with Project Nongenue and various workshops. She is incredibly grateful to Kaycie and team for building this play with her and to The Tank for their consistent support. KAYCIE SWEENEY

Director

Kaycie Sweeney is a theater artist and technician based in NYC. Kaycie has worked extensively with the Public Theater, recent credits include: Seven Methods of Killing Kylie Jenner, Richard III, and As You Like It. Upcoming: Shakespeare in the Park’s Hamlet and The Tempest. Credits with Audible Theater: Lucy and Drinking in America.


HEALY KNIGHT

Frances

Healy Knight is an actor based in New York City. She has performed with the 938 Collective (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, No Exit), Brooklyn Center for Theater Research (Blithe Spirit, The Importance of Being Earnest), Mom’s Against Sketch Comedy Group, and New Relic Theater (Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream). She gives great big thanks and love to everyone involved in this production, enjoy the show!


KHALI SYKES

Gretchen

Khali Sykes is a recent Brooklyn transplant and she is so excited to make her NY acting debut. She is a dancer, actor, teaching artist, writer, and director with a particular affinity for experimental, fantastical, and explorative works for the stage and screen. She received her B.A. in acting and sociology from the University of Texas. Her most recent projects include choreographing the Wizard of Oz at Impact Arts in Austin, acting in the film House of Abraham with Jump Rock Productions, and directing a 10-minute musical, “Headspace”, for the Sound Bites X Music Festival. She is represented by IKIGAI management and Collier Talent.

Izabel Mar (she/they) is an Asian American actor and poet based in New York. Most recent credits include SHOWING UP - Kelly Reichardt (a24 Cannes, New York Film Festival) and YEAR OF THE FOX - Megan Griffiths (Seattle International Film Festival). FBI: MOST WANTED (CBS). Off-broadway MACBETH by Erica Schmidt (Red Bull Theatre, Drama Desk and Lortel nominated). MADELINE WASSON

Zoe

Madeline Wasson (she/her) is a writer and performer living in Brooklyn, NY. She moved to NYC following her graduation from Georgetown University, where she studied Women’s and Gender Studies, concentrating in Cultural and Media Representations of Gender. She is interested in how art and media both reflect and inform shifting attitudes about sex and gender. Madeline is returning to the stage after a near two-year hiatus in Joan of Arc in a Supermarket in California, and the opportunity couldn’t have been more perfect. She sends a major thank you thank you thank you to Kaycie, Chloe, and everyone involved throughout this beautiful process!

Maaike Laanstra-Corn is so excited to be a part of this! Recent Credits include Fullerton (Bedlam), Calf Scramble (Workshop Theater) Button Lake Band Camp (Clubbed Thumb), Ms. Lily (Clubbed Thumb), Me and Who (The Brick/Rough Draft Festival), Grendel’s Mother (Hunter MFA Playwrights Festival), kemps and Your Own Personal Exegesis (Brown University). AMELIA EVANS

Choreographer/Ballerina

Amelia is a California native, New York-based actress/dancer. She has appeared in TV commercials for brands like Reign Storm Energy and SharkNinja, and recent Short Film, Brute McGoon. In 2020, Amelia was a rookie finalist for the Dallas Cowboys’ Cheerleaders, and appeared in Season 14 of CMT’s Dallas Cowboys’ Cheerleaders: Making the Team. A graduate from Southern Methodist University, Amelia earned her degree in Musical Theatre and Advertising. In LA, Amelia trained with The Groundlings and John Rosenfeld Studios and here in NY, she is a member of Stella Adler’s Summer Conservatory class. In 2017 Amelia had the privilege of choreographing and performing for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with Deerfield Academy’s Pinkalicious. Amelia is thrilled to choreograph for Joan of Arc in a Supermarket in California, to collaborate with old friends and new friends, and to create art that drives conversation. Thank you Kaycie and Chloe for letting me be a part of your work, the whole JOA family for inspiring me, and Catriona Hynds for providing me the foundation for my dream.

GWENDOLYN TORRENCE

Ballerina

Originally from the DC area, Gwendolyn is an actor/mover currently living in New York. She graduated from Montclair State University with a BFA in Acting. She is classically trained in dance and movement and had the fortune of studying under the best at Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Along with dance, she has extensive experience in trapeze, having worked as a circus staff member at French Woods Festival. She is currently working on small projects and pursuing her love of dance and theatre. @__ggwendolyn__


CAROLINE STRICKLAND

Live Score/The Voice

Caroline Strickland is an indie rock artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Her debut EP “Watch,” which was released in February of this year, is a three track indie rock epic inspired by the likes of PJ Harvey, Julia Jacklin, Carole King, and SASAMI. Driven by a searing 90s guitar sound, dark and smoky vocals, and an inclination towards desperation and tenderness, Strickland’s music is both a nod back to the early rock and roll greats and a shining new light in the modern wave of femme indie rock.


MIKAELA JANE

Live Score

MJ is a musician, songstress, and sound artist based on the west coast. Recently she has been exploring film scoring and improvised looped compositions featuring found-sounds. Her latest set of demos is inspired by desert landscapes, lust, and the endless tangle of LA highway. She likes Pauline Oliveros, PJ Harvey, shoe shopping, and collage. ANNA MADER

Producer/Dramaturg

Anna is a dramaturg, producer, and director from TN, now based in Brooklyn and Charleston, SC.  She recently graduated from The New School with a MA in Media Studies with a focus on film production, and she holds a BA in Theater from UCLA. Her work focuses on connections between the interpersonal & the collective world, and how evolving technologies advance/hinder humankind’s awareness and connectivity. She loves being a part of the JOA team and is thrilled to be in one of her favorite places - the supermarket! @bananatater


NAOMI SCHILLER

Producer

Naomi Schiller is an arts administrator and producer from the San Francisco Bay Area. She is currently the administrative associate for the props department at the Metropolitan Opera and was recently the Company Management Fellow for Berkeley Repertory Theatre’s ‘21-’22 season. Her experience also includes music video producing and script supervision as well as stage management, wardrobe coordination, costume design, and event facilitation with Berkeley Playhouse, Oakland Theater Project, and the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden. She graduated from Occidental College with a degree in sociology and gender studies.


ELLIE ZAMBARANO

Producer

Ellie Zambarano is a producer and casting director originally from Austin, TX. Her experience is primarily in non-traditional casting, previously working for directors Chloé Zhao, Joshua James Richards, and Carlos López Estrada. She currently works with Brooklyn-based production company Storm City Films. She holds a BFA in musical theatre from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She is loving being on the Joan of Arc journey (and finds it fitting that she and Chloe first met over the shared stress of hauling groceries up their apartment stairs).


CAT PFINGST

Scenic & Costume Designer

Before she moved to Brooklyn, Cat lived in Philadelphia where she graduated from Drexel University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion Design. Since then, she has found energy within many overlapping creative sectors, and has worked on previous productions with Chloe Xtina which involved styling, scenic design, and prop making. Through the use of existing materials, Cat seeks to fabricate new realms. She is often inspired by the tension between day-to-day mundanity and the fantastical.


RYAN GAMBLIN

Sound Designer

Ryan Gamblin is a sound designer, composer, and performance-maker based in Brooklyn, NY. Their work operates around found media, original composition, system manipulation, and a fixation on collective effervescence through post-drama. Recent designs include: Weathering (Faye Driscoll), Liveness: A Performance Made from the WNYC Archives (The Civilians), and Mary Jane (Third Rail Rep).  Member, TSDCA. LOLA BASILIERE

Associate Sound Designer

Lola Basiliere is a multidisciplinary designer, visual artist, and researcher based out of Manhattan. Previous credits include: Weasel Festival (Sound Designer, The Brick), The Threepenny Opera (Dramaturg, Tisch Drama Stage), in lucem (Sound Designer, Tisch Drama Stage), Women’s Work Play Festival (Assistant Production Designer, New Perspectives Theater Company). PEMA BALDWIN

Lighting Designer

Pema is a filmmaker from Santa Fe, NM currently focused on documentary work. Joan of Arc in a Supermarket in California is his first effort in lighting direction, and he looks forward to grow his creative capabilities alongside this devoted crew of talented artists and technicians!


MAYA RAJAN

Assistant Director

Maya Rajan (she/her) is an Indian-American filmmaker based in Brooklyn, NY. She studied film at Colorado College and The Film and Performing Arts School in Prague, gaining experience as a director, writer, and editor on multiple projects. She is currently in post-production on a documentary she shot in Glasgow, Scotland this past year, while also working as a filmmaking teacher across NY Public Schools. Joan of Arc in a Supermarket in California is Maya’s first experience working in theatre, and she is so eternally grateful that Kaycie and Chloe have trusted her with this role on a truly amazing project. She looks forward to more theatre productions in her future and hopes to work with the JOA family again soon! 


TABITHA DAVIDSON

Stage Manager

Tabitha Davidson is currently a student at Wesleyan University studying Theater, Government, and History. Her love of storytelling and production has led her to stage management, and in the future she plans to pursue directing as well. She was born and raised in NYC.


SORYN MOUTON

Poster and Graphic Designer

Soryn Mouton is an artist and designer born, raised, & based in Los Angeles, CA. She holds a BFA from the Cooper Union and is currently a graphic designer at Stept Studios as well as a freelance designer specializing in film titles, posters, and director’s treatments. She also dabbles in drawing, writing, and playing guitar.
